- Size for your torso, not your height. Past large the body widens while the shoulder and sleeve stay put, so taking the next size up gains room through the chest without lengthening the arms.

Acrylic knitwear feels perfectly good for a season, then pills into fuzz and starts holding static. One decent merino piece costs more upfront and will outlast three acrylic ones, which makes the math easier than it first appears.

Sizing by build. If you're lean, most heavyweight pieces will wear slightly large on you, and the instinct is to size down. Resist it: buy true to size and let the structure of the garment give you shape, because sizing down costs you the drape that made the piece look intentional.
If you're athletic or broad through the chest and shoulders, true to size is usually correct, but check the shoulder seam before anything else, since it's the one measurement no tailor can fix for you.
If you carry weight through the middle, size for your torso rather than your chest and favour a straight cut over anything tapered. And when you're genuinely between sizes on a heavier piece, size up. You can always let a garment breathe. You can't add room that was never cut into it.
